During the Spring Fling/Courtyard Lunch May 9, loud aggressive barking could be heard in the courtyard.  On further investigation, Officer Aaron Davis of the Albany Police Department was on site with his canine officer, Hutch.

Per the Democratic Herald, “Davis is an 18-year veteran of the Albany Police Department” and “their work together has resulted in more than 200 arrests.”

When asked if he thought it was a problem being on a college campus with people who might have any drugs in a crowd, by Dale Hummel, a student at LBCC, Officer Davis explained that the dog has to be commanded to go into action and retrieve.

Hutch, a 4 year old Belgian Malinois, a new breed, which is mistaken for the german shepherd, has been trained to retrieve drugs, specifically marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin.

During a drug bust October 20, 2011, Hutch “sniffed out what police described as a brick of methamphetamine, more than a pound, hidden inside a “common, everyday item” inside the car,” per the Democratic Herald reporter, AnneMarie Knepper.  There was also more than $100,000, along with other drug dealing operation supplies seized that day.

At his home, Hutch is placed in a 6 foot enclosed kennel as he is able to scale over 6 feet and is an awesome athlete, per Officer Davis.  The camaraderie and love between the two is obvious, as Officer Davis places a drug stash in one of the cones and Hutch finds it in a few seconds.

When asked about how he got Hutch, Officer Davis said it was a blind date which worked out but this is not the usual way as one of his colleagues has been through numerous dogs and is still looking for the perfect fit.  Hutch is valued at $12,000 but Davis was able to get him for $3,500.

Davis and Hutch train 16 hours a month and takes commands in Flemish.  They recently did a 2 month stint of border patrol in West Texas.
